Summary: | IntroductionApproximately 6 million Americans are on anticoagulants in the outpatient setting. Insufficient patient education and comprehension regarding anticoagulants is a predictor of bleeding complications. Our study sought to assess anticoagulant knowledge and gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) awareness in anticoagulated patients.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study by surveying 55 anticoagulated patients, with 28 patients surveyed at a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) support group and 27 patients surveyed at anticoagulation clinic. Self-administered patient questionnaires assessed patient knowledge of GIB symptoms, anticoagulant medication specifics and perception of initial anticoagulant counseling.ResultsPatients performed poorly in demonstrating anticoagulant knowledge, including their anticoagulant’s mechanism of action, half-life and antidote.
