Summary:Construction industry plays an important role in socio-economy development of any developing country. world over, transportation infrastructure projects face delays in commissioning and India is no exception. The time of construction is a benchmark for assessing the project performance. Some of the unexpected activities during project the led to delay in project completion duration. Construction projects delay was considered as the most common problems causing negative effects in the construction projects. In this project we identify the important delay causing factors in the commissioning of metro rail projects in India. In India, several metro rail construction projects experiencing more delays, due to that the initially fixed delivery duration and expenses also exceeded. “delay can be defined as the time overrun or the extension of time for finishing the project”. This paper aims to find out the most significant factors causing delays in Indian metro rail projects through literature review and questionnaire survey. From the literature review 117 causes of delays categorized into 9 different groups, 27 effects were acknowledged and it also rankings given by each authors for the delaying factors aren't an equivalent to varying native and context. Further, the survey is conducted with the participants (contractors, client, consultants and others) of Indian construction. Calculation of relative importance index (rii) for the shortlisted factors yielded the ranking. The ranking by various categories of respondents was analyzed using importance index method (impi%)
