Summary: | In this study, a natural sunscreen agent was prepared using lignin from an organosolv extraction process. The organosolv lignin solution was prepared by mixing coconut coir with 50 wt % of ethanol at the boiling point under reflux. The effect of lignin concentration (500 ppm to 1500 ppm with an interval of 100 ppm) on the UV absorbance value was observed using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry at UV-C ranges (200-290 nm), UV-B ranges (290-320 nm), and UV-A ranges (320-400 nm). The results showed that the UV absorbance value was increased by the increase in lignin concentration. All the various concentrations of organosolv lignin can absorb UV-B and UV-C perfectly. However, for UV-A, the lignin concentration should be above 1000 ppm to be able to absorb UV-A. Therefore, the organosolv lignin had the potential to be explored for sunscreen application. |
