Description
Summary:Abstract This study used an in-vitro batch culture assessment to examine DMD, ruminal fermentation and CH4 production associated with AAC Mountainview, a new variety of sainfoin (cv. Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.) alone or in combination with hybrid bromegrass (cv. AC Knowles) at 3 seeding ratios (100, 70:30 and 50:50) and 2 harvest dates in mid June and mid August. An alfalfa-meadow bromegrass (AG) mixture was included as a check. Forage materials were obtained from an accompanying agronomic study established at Brandon, MB and Saskatoon, SK in western Canada. This experiment was analysed as a randomised complete block design including the fixed effects of forage, harvest and site and the random effects of run, replication and interactions between mixture and replication. Forage samples were incubated at 39°C in vials containing buffered medium and rumen fluid for 48- hrs. At pre-determined timepoints, gas pressure was recorded and gas samples for CH4 determination were collected. Pure sainfoin had lower DMD (P
