Description
Summary:experiencing the highest disease burden including higher cardiovascular disease prevalence, incidence and mortality. The Jackson Heart Study (JHS) is the largest single-site, prospective epidemiologic cohort of African Americans in the U.S. The JHS was developed to examine the etiology of cardiovascular disease among African Americans, and it provides a unique opportunity to untangle the multifactorial contributions of income inequality, social factors, psychological stress, and barriers to access that impact health behaviors and drive disparities in clinical disease. We report the impact of minority aging in African Americans, examining social determinants of health and disease risk and effects of racial and ethnic disparities on health care utilization. Going forward, a key goal for population health is to develop innovative strategies to overcome social determinants of health to reduce disparities in vulnerable groups.
