Summary: | Cognitive ergonomics has to do with how people perceive information and make decisions. In industrial operations, an elementary understanding of cognitive ergonomics can help with the design of controls, displays, and signs in a way that can help reduce mistakes in general and improve safety in particular. Many mistakes and errors that people make can really be attributable to poor design, such as confusing dials or controls that do not operate as expected. Guidelines for design are presented: 1. Standardize. 2. Use stereotypes. 3. Link actions with perceptions. 4. Present information with appropriate detail. 5. Simplify presentation of information. 6. Present clear images. 7. Use redundancies. 8. Use patterns. 9. Provide variable stimuli. 10. Provide instantaneous feedback. |
