Summary: | As voice over IP (VOIP) lowers the costs of all forms of transport, cellular costs should drop accordingly. However, with mobility increasing in importance to the enterprise, and the wireless technology itself changing, enterprise management must really focus on other issues and solutions for mobile communications, rather than just those from the past. Convergence is particularly applicable to mobile users because, depending upon where such users happen to be, their ability to communicate will depend upon the choices in contact modality. If they are in a car, they can't type; if they are walking or even standing, talking is most convenient; if they are in a meeting, a noisy environment, or a non-private area, they may not be able to talk easily or freely. Clearly, real-time, two-way communication requires a conversational exchange (such as voice or instant messaging). Bottom line, mobile users will need more than voice services to communicate effectively with others - so they will need multimodal devices. |
