Summary: | Burton M. Joyce, president and chief executive officer of Terra International (Sioux City, Iowa), says that the company is becoming leaner. Terra claims to be the top ranking corporate distributor of fertilizers and seeds in the US and calls itself one of the 3 largest US marketers of crop protection chemicals. The company has dropped 10 of the 250 retail outlets that it operated a few years ago. During 1986, Terra's full-time workforce was reduced by 9.1%, to 1,570. Joyce has no illusions about the problems troubling US agriculture, but he is fundamentally optimistic about the business he operates. Joyce plans to expand Terra's services and is looking for growth opportunities. Joyce would like to take Terra beyond its traditional Midwest territory and into more financially fertile territory in the South and West, where the company could achieve greater diversity. The company will be pushing for a more intensive marketing effort. Industry observers are positive generally about Terra's prospects. |
