Description
Summary:[...]two state-university systems, in Georgia and Maryland, are in the market for new chancellors. Henry L. King, a Manhattan lawyer and Columbia trustee who is chairman of the presidential search there, says the Harvard and other hires haven't diminished the pool. The Arizona Board of Regents picked Owen Francis Cargol to be the president of Northern Arizona University because, as the chairwoman of the search committee put it, "he perfectly fit the bill." The other two finalists for the position were both "highly recommended" by the faculty groups. W. Linn Montgomery, a biology professor and past president of the Faculty Senate, acknowledges that Mr. Cargol has experience in distance education and government relations, but Mr. Montgomery sees a disconnect between the new president's skills and Northern Arizona's aspirations. Mr. Cargol didn't respond directly to the department chairmen's criticisms, saying that in any search process, people are "asked to be forthright," and that "the challenge for the successful candidate is always to address the concerns of the constituents who didn't support him."
