Description
Summary:Conrad Black believes that the Western world is enduring a prolonged crisis of mediocre leadership which descended shortly after the end of the Cold War and shows little sign of abating. He considers the leadership vacuum in Germany under Angela Merkel and France, under the influence of Francois Hollande; the neoliberal ravages of Margaret Thatcher's successors in Tony Blair and David Cameron, and the current vortex in American politics that has led to the nomination of blowhard developer and reality TV star Donald Trump as the candidate of the Republican Party in the presidental election. He concludes by saying that it is the great political irony of current times that the US is the chief author and engine of the triumph of modern democracy and of the free-market economy in much of the world, but that it is not now one of the world's better functioning democracies.
