Description
Summary:Reviews Germany: Memories of a nation at the British Museum until January 25, 2015 and the accompanying book by Neil Macgregor. Both the exhibition and the books ask us to reconsider the very notion of "Germany". A great strength of the exhibition is prominence and sympathy it gives to the Holy Roman Empire, and much is made of the importance of imperial symbols. It also finds history preserved in everyday objects such as coins and banknotes. Everything from painting to music, to cars to money is represented here and used to tell a story about the history and identity of a nation. MacGregor's book is far more than a companion to the exhibition; it is a reflective and informative essay, which makes explicit many connections the viewer may easily miss, and has not only more material but different emphases.
