Summary: | Discussed are the results of a market study to evaluate the technical adequacy of speech technology used in an interactive telephone service used in Europe. The LE-MLAP RailTel (Railway Telephone Information Service) project survey was also designed to consider service provider & user requirements & to estimate both current usage patterns & projected demands for automated services. Field trials were conducted in six countries to assess the performance of the three prototype automated services, their degree of acceptance by users, & areas requiring improvement. For the field trial, English-, French-, & German-speaking subjects (N = 100 each) were asked to make a call requesting information to the automated system & to complete a brief questionnaire afterward. The high % of positive responses suggests that a simple system-directed dialogue is feasible, provided the dialogue is well-designed. 1 Figure, 2 References. R. Meyer |
