Summary: | The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of the Speech Locus of Control scale (SP-LOC) to determine if stutterers differed from nonstutterers in their general locus of control and their speech-specific locus of control. Subjects were 21 adult stutterers and 21 adult nonstutterers. The construct validity of the SP-LOC was assessed by correlating subjects scores on the SP-LOC with measures of anxiety, communication attitude, extraversion, and neuroticism. Results of the study indicate that there is preliminary evidence for the validity of the SP-LOC scale, based on relatively low correlations between the SP-LOC and the other measures. However, there was a high correlation between the SP-LOC measure and the Erickson S24 scale of communication attitude. Further research is necessary to determine if the SP-LOC scale is measuring a different construct than attitude and if there are additional factors that are related to speech locus of control. |
