Summary: | An interim report of a national survey on the nature & extent of children's voluntary reading, conducted in England in March, 1971. Participants included approximately 8,000 in 3 age groups--10, 12, & 14. The Ss were asked to answer an open-ended questionnaire in which they cited their reading materials. A tentative finding is that a sizeable minority of children do little or no leisure time reading. Secondary school boys show a great interest in non-narrative books, provision of books by the school determines to a great extent what children read, & the teacher's own knowledge about books can vitally affect the child's reading development.
