Description
Summary:Evidence from serum enzyme studies and morphologic study of skeletal muscle fibers and subterminal motor nerves that strongly suggests abnormalities of the neuromuscular system in some, if not all, patients with schizophrenia and the affective psychoses has recently been extensively reviewed in the Schizophrenia Bulletin (Meltzer, 1976). That review briefly mentioned electrophysiologic investigations of neuromuscular function in psychotic patients. The purpose of this article is to report some of these studies in detail and review the few other electrophysiologic studies in patients with the major mental illnesses. Because the measures to be discussed are probably unfamiliar to many readers of the Bulletin, the initial part of this article provides an introduction to selected aspects of the electrophysiologic study of neuromuscular function in man.
