Summary: | THE EXTENT OF THE INTERDISCIPLINARY EXPOSURE REQUIRED FOR BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERS ACTUALLY DEPENDS UPON THE 3 SPECIFIC ROLES THAT BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERS PLAY. THE 'PROBLEM SOLVER' MAINTAINS THE TRADITIONAL SERVICE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LIFE SCIENTIST, WHO ORIGINATES A PROBLEM THAN CAN BE SOLVED BY THE APPLICATION OF THE SPECIFIC EXPERTISE OF THE ENGINEER. THE 'TECHNOLOGICAL ENTREPRENEUR' ASSUMES THAT THE GAP BETWEEN THE TECHNOLOGICAL EDUCATION OF THE LIFE SCIENTIST OR MD & PRESENT TECHNOLOGICAL CAPABILITY IS TOO GREAT. HE THEREFORE EXAMINES SOME PORTION OF THE BIOLOGICAL OR MEDICAL FRONT & IDENTIFIES AREAS IN WHICH ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY MIGHT BE BROUGHT TO BEAR WITH ADVANTAGE. THE 'ENGINEER-SCIENTIST' IS NOT CONCERNED WITH THE INVENTION OR CONSTRUCTION OF HARDWARE AT ALL. HE IS PRIMARILY INTERESTED IN APPLYING ENGINEERING CONCEPTS & MODELING TECHNIQUES TO THE INVESTIGATION & EXPLORATION OF BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES. EACH OF THESE 3 ROLES ENVISIONED FOR THE BIOMEDICAL ENGINEER REQUIRES A DIFFERENT ATTITUDE, AS WELL AS A SPECIFIC DEGREE OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE BIOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT.
