Summary: | Considers reviews of post-mortem brain studies of suicide victims, in half of which reduced levels of 5-HT and of its metabolite 5-HIAA were established. Concluded that there is a reduction of presynaptic 5-HT activity in the brain, with a compensatory post-synaptic up-regulation of the number of 5-HT2 receptor sites. Changes in 5-HT metabolism are not associated with any specific major psychiatric disorder. (Original abstract-amended) |
