Summary: | A 63‐year‐old male presented with a 6‐month history of worsening exertional dyspnea and was found to have three‐vessel coronary artery disease. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a filamentous structure attached to the anterior mitral valve leaflet, which was confirmed during surgery as filamentous network. To our knowledge, this is the first report to describe such a network attached to the mitral valve. (Echocardiography 2010;27:E87‐E89)
Many cardiac structures (e.g., eustachian valve, Chiari network, pectinate muscles, moderator band, and trabeculations) are identifi ed as normal anatomic variants. The possibility of erroneous interpretation as pathologic states is frequent. We describe a 63‐year‐old male with three‐vessel coronary artery disease who presented with worsening exertional dyspnea. Transthoracic and transesophageal echoardiography revealed moderate mitral regurgitation with elongated and redundant anterior mitral leafl et. A fi lamentous structure attached to the anterior mitral valve leafl et was also seen. During cardiac surgery (bypass grafting and mitral valve repair), the fi lamentous structure was excised and seen as a network attached to both anterior leafl et and its chordae. |
