Description
Summary:The ninth meeting of the UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea (UNICPOLOS) was held in New York from Jun 23 to Jun 27, 2008. The meeting devoted its consultations to the topic of maritime security and safety, and was co-chaired by Ambassador Paul Badji of Senegal and Lorraine Ridgeway of Canada. During the meeting, a number of panel discussions provided an opportunity to focus on various areas of concern, such as piracy and armed robbery against ships; the prevention and suppression of international organized crime such as drug-trafficking and smuggling of migrants; safety and security issues confronting seafarers and treatment of persons rescued at sea; and the enhancement of cooperation and development of capacity building. Following consideration of the elements proposed by the Co-Chairpersons, the meeting agreed by consensus to put forward various issues to the General Assembly relating to maritime security and safety.
