Summary: | Under the current US health system, employers decide whether or not to offer health insurance to their employees. An employer that decides to offer health insurance also selects the health plans(s) available to employees and the terms under which the plan(s) will be offered, including the premium split between the employer and the employee. In response to several concerns, a number of policy analysts have argued that the current dependence of health insurance on employment should be severed or reduced and the tax code modified accordingly. If such policy changes were implemented, employees would make their health insurance decisions in a very different environment. A study examines the issues from employees' perspective, based on the findings from focus groups conducted with employees in large companies. |
