Vitiligo is a relatively common, acquired pigmentary disorder characterized by areas of depigmented skin resulting from loss of epidermal melanocytes. The psychological effects of vitiligo are influenced and exacerbated by societal perceptions of skin disfigurement and irregularities in skin color.
