Description
Summary:Niklas Luhmann's theory of autopoiesis (which emphasizes the operatively closed self-reproduction of subsystems differentiated by function) is used to reconstruct the question of the extent to which modern society is capable of integrating partial discourses & referring to resources in a splintered context. Such an examination permits the possibility of coordination between discourses, which is preferable to Luhmann's interpretation of "operative closeness" by means of differentiation between code & program. If a transcendent speech is not possible, there must at least be an attempt to coordinate & integrate discourses. At stake is the potential of rationality in modern societies. 56 References.
