Summary: | The relative popularity of 40 economics journals is estimated using citations from the Social Sciences Citation Index as a proxy for revealed preference by authors. Three ranking schemes are presented, based on citations (1977-1982) of all articles published in 1974-1976: total number of citations, citations per article, & the cross-product of both. Variations between rankings by total citations & citations per article are discussed. In the "overall" ranking, the Journal of Political Economy holds the top position by a fair margin over the American Economic Review, both of which ranked substantially over the rest. 3 Tables, 11 References.
