Description
Summary:The Republic of China, with 18 million inhabitants, is an economically viable island nation, with a variety of ethnic ties to the Chinese mainland. About 85% of the Taiwanese are descendants of immigrants who have been arriving from the mainland since the seventeenth century, most from the southeastern provinces of Fukien & Kwangtung. Many more immigrants from all parts of China fled to the island during the Revolution of 1949. There are also about 300,000 descendants of the original Malayan-Polynesian group, already present before the seventeenth century. Most of the Taiwanese live on the densely populated western coastal strip. French sociological & anthropological studies of Taiwan have been hampered by the lack of formal diplomatic ties between France & the Republic of China. An annotated bibliography is presented of research on Taiwan since 1958. 33 References. M. Meeks.
