Summary: | The controversy over the role of educ in Argentina started during the 19th cent with the opposed views of Domingo Sarmiento & Juan Bautista Alberdi. The former insisted on educ while the latter preferred European immigration as a lever of change. The position of the traditional, pre-immigration criolle Mc's is represented by Sarmiento, while Alberdi reflects the views of a higher & more conservative soc stratum. The rapid growth of public educ at the end of the 19th cent was due to the need for the assimilation of immigrants. At present the changed conditions of the country make it less likely that the Uc's will continue using public, secular educ for that purpose. There is now an important trend towards strengthening the private sector of educ at all levels, which was reversed only during the Peron gov. A new trend is the formation of a private but popular sector of educ, including adult & trade union educ, which can become the basis for pluralism & reformist orientations in this field. AA. |
