Summary: | `Sojourn res' is defined as developmental res in the sense that it is concerned with what happens to the individual over time. Studies of the traveler among cultures demand that the soc sci'st attend to relatively crucial phases in a sequence of individual adjustment phenomena that occur in changing soc contexts. A 9-phase sequence is suggested, including: (1) predeparture preparation, (2) the act of leaving, (3) en route experiences, (4) the act of entry, (5) post-arrival orientation, (6) exploration, (7) tentative commitment, (8) ultimate'commitment, & (9) decision re further travel. Sojourn res may yield evidence about regularities in adjustment sequences & predictable is of phases in adjustment. Systematic diff's in sojourn experiences are expected to be r'ed with diff's in personality, diff's in sets of cultures among which the visitor travels, & diff's in the sojourn maturity of the traveler.
