Summary:Do minority positions make for a greater or lesser average degree of integration between educational attainment and occupation? Coefficients of contingency were computed between education and employment for native whites and Negroes separately, on the basis of data from the 1940 census on a 5% sample of the population. For all age groups the relationship between education and occupation is consistently higher for whites than for Negroes. The same relationship holds between education and employment (significant at .01 level). The relationship between education and employment is least in the rural South for both Negroes and whites. It is greatest for whites in the urban South, and greatest for Negroes in the urban North and West, being consistently higher for whites regardless of region and community type. For males, the lesser correlation between occupation and education among Negroes as compared with whites is fully accounted for by characteristics of the range of occupation available to Negroes in the rural South, but is not so accountable in any of the urban areas. For females, the difference in degree of relationship between education and occupation for Negroes and whites 'is small in the South, and the majority of the difference in the North and West is attributable to occupational distribution.' The following hypothesis is stated: 'Members of a disadvantaged minority group tend to be characterized by a lesser average degree of integration among their various statuses than are members of the majority group.'
