Description
Summary:Against the background of the recent diagnosis of a "practice turn" in social theory & cultural analysis, this article works out basic elements of what a "practice theory" can be in contrast to alternative social & cultural theories. Three features are of particular relevance for a theory of social practices: the "informal", tacit logic of practices, & the location of the social in practical understanding & know-how techniques; the materiality of practices as dependent on bodies & artifacts; & the tension between routinization & basic incalculabilities of social practices. 93 References.
