Summary: | It is argued that transformational grammarians' preference for strings & labeled bracketings over trees was made at the expense of descriptive adequacy. Relation- & order-changing transformations are distinguished & the discontinuous surface structure caused by the latter is analyzed in terms of mapping tree classes. The notion of tree is defined & its axioms are outlined. It is argued that parenthetical placement & other order-changing transformations belong to the stylistic component of a grammar & are governed by a stylistic rule. Z. Dubiel |
