Summary: | It is stressed that bilingual instruction must teach a self-critical attitude toward language usage to develop the pragmatic skill of differentiating between formal & informal codes. Level I & II U programs are detailed. At the introductory level emphasis is placed on basic grammar, reading, & composition. A graded literary & cultural reader is used. At this level the student is encouraged to imitate models of correct lang use. The intermediate level focuses on complex linguistic behavior. Composition & reading skills are refined. Vocabulary is expanded with technical & abstract words. The student is taught correct use of idioms & is encouraged to work with a monolingual rather than a bilingual dictionary. Materials, method, & evaluation are detailed. Z. Dubiel |
