Summary: | As linguistics & social science become more integrated, some independent sociolinguistic categories are emerging in an attempt at theory building. The temporal & spatial structures of speech behavior is emphasized, the latter (space-dimension) having been somewhat neglected previously. Both temporal & spatial speech structures have social dimensions. Also discussed are notions of process vs. entity, uniform & invariant structures in language, functions of language--rational & reflexive, language identity, language learning--native, 2nd, & foreign, language design--including the cognitive, & design dimensions, & social controls on language.
