Summary:There is very little overlap among the sets of journals cited by Indian Journal of Ecology and Tropical Ecology on the one hand and eight core journals of the field on the other. Also, the two Indian journals refer to a much higher percentage of work reported ten or more years ago and to a much lower percentage of papers published in the preceding four years than the core journals do. On both these counts, the two Indian journals do not belong to the mainstream literature of ecology, as is also evident from the fact that they are quoted hardly ever in international journals. Ecological research in India, to the extent reflected by these two journals, is of low quahty and of negligible international relevance.
