Summary: | This article on German political science and the European Union (EU) follows earlier reviews of a similar nature in JEPP (Giuliani and Radaelli 1999; Leon and Pasquier 2001; Miles and Morth 2002; Muftuler-Bac 2003; Smith 2000). In two parts, it seeks to give a thematic and quantitative overview of the state of the art in German-speaking political science research on European integration. First, we briefly outline the current institutional setting in which this research body is embedded and present some explorative empirical data about quantitative and thematic developments in German EU studies. We then try to make sense of the resulting picture by reflecting on its development within political science in Germany since 1945, and its relation to the ongoing process of European integration. Second, we discuss some prominent themes developed by German scholars which resonate in international circles. (Original abstract) |
