Summary:The special focus of this issue originates from a conference on Tourism Economic Modelling and Competitiveness held in Rio de Janeiro in October 2005, as part of the World Travel Forum. This conference was the second in a series, the first of which was reported on in the special issue in Volume 11, No 1 of Tourism Economics, and was organized by the late Professor Thea Sinclair, who arranged for several papers to be jointly edited into this special focus. Following her untimely death in September 2006, with most of the editorial work having been completed, this special focus has now been finalized and is dedicated to Professor Sinclair's organization of the conference and special issue and to the inspiration she gave to numerous tourism economists and students over many years.
