Summary:This study investigates governance in the district of Mae Sot, located at the Thailand-Burma border. Unlike other places in Thailand, the enormous presence of non-Thais, particularly unauthorised migrants, makes Mae Sot unique in matters of administration and governance. This study examines the interactions of the various governing systems that exist in Mae Sot, including those of the Burmese, even though the Burmese do not have a proper legal status in the Thai district. The study asks if modern states can be conceptualised in terms of an isomorphism with territory, sovereignty and citizenship.
