Summary: | Cardiovascular Disease (CD) is a worldwide public health problem with increasing global costs for countries. Some studies have calculated that the percentage of death caused by CD could increase from 19.5% to 28.5% by the year 2020. Abdominal obesity is one of the most important demonstrated risk factors for CD; nevertheless, the body mass index does not represent an exact measurement of the risk of body fat distribution. Waist perimeter (WP) is a simple measure used to evaluate abdominal fat. In a recent study carried out with 145 military subjects, our research group has found that a cut-off point of 88 cm for abdominal perimeter correlates better with presence of cardiovascular risk. The objective of the present study was to establish if the cut off point of 90 cm WP in a group of subjects from the FAC is the value that better identifies individuals with cardiovascular risk. |
