Description
Summary:Surface sediment samples collected (Peterson grab samplers) from the estuaries of the Hooghly river, the Rushikulya river and from nearshore regions of the western Bay of Bengal were analysed for mercury content. An automatic mercury analyser (ECIL MA 58004) was used after the complete acid digestion of samples. Average levels for the Rushikulya estuary were between 9-23 ppm. Levels in nearshore regions ranged from 0.95-2.85 ppm except for a high value of 5.25 ppm near the effluent discharge area of Krishna river and Godavari river. Mercury in these sediments was derived from coastal industries including 6 chlor-alkali plants, with mercury cell processing systems, located along the east coast of India.
