Description
Summary:Hydraulic fluids are widely used in industry, and the toxicity of Pydraul 50E, an alkyl-aryl phosphate ester, to lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) was investigated. Data are presented on survival and growth of the fish, and the whole-body residues, during continuous exposure to different concentrations of the chemical during 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 d. At the highest concentration tested (16 ug per litre), survival of fish was significantly reduced after 90 d and there were no survivors after 120 d. Growth of the fish was affected earlier and at lower concentrations than survival. Pathological changes were observed after 90 d in the presence of 5.3 ug per litre. With increasing concentrations of the chemical, both uptake of the chemical and the bioconcentration factor increased, but there were differences in the uptake of the different components of the chemical.
