Summary:Because a significant aspect of Perioperative Nurses Week is recognizing those who contribute to the profession, I wanted to express my gratitude and acknowledge the 11 other members of your AORN Board of Directors. When I attended nursing school as a secondcareer student in a one-year accelerated program, one of the students in the traditional program was a Navy sailor who was on leave so that he could attend nursing school. [A]s providers, we need to ensure highquality, safe care for these patients regardless of whether they are having gender-affirming surgery, joint replacement, sinus surgery, or any other intervention they might need.1(p216) One Task Force Member's Personal Experience With a Transgender Patient I asked the task force to provide a firsthand example of how the needs of the transgender patient might be different from other patients. The clinical example below perfectly illustrates how we must adapt our routine practices and hospital policies to be more inclusive for patients.
