Summary: | Aspects related to the testing of two designs of cemented ZrO2 ceramic femoral components, Walter-Dias Modular and Encore, are discussed. Encore incorporates two pegs in its design. One of the key tests involves static loading with full knee support. The test has been shown to be sensitive to the Young's modulus of the support as well as its height. Fully supported tests were carried out using different support materials. Tests were also carried out on Encore specimens which had a peg with a crack in the profile. The effect of Young's modulus and height of support was confirmed. Strengths of about 7, 30 and 45 kN were obtained for Young's moduli of 25, 31.6 and 36 GPa, respectively, and 45 and 55 kN for heights of 56 and 66 mm, respectively. The average value for the pegs was 1.5 kN, with a range of 1.1-1.8 kN. 3 refs. |
