Summary:(YBa sub 2 Cu sub 3 ) sub 1 sub - sub x Na sub x O sub 7 sub - sub / delta / system with x=0-0.8 is investigated. Na doping with x < or =0.26 does not affect T sub / c /, and crystal structure maintains the orthorhombic lattice with a slightly smaller unit cell. However, Na doping increases the sintering and grain growth kinetics, resulting in a higher superconducting phase vol and enhanced Meissner effect. It also lowers the processing temp. Data also suggest that Na atoms diffuse into the superconducting YBa sub 2 Cu sub 3 O sub 7 sub - sub / delta / crystallites and stabilize the orthorhombic phase. The transition temp. (o approaches t) in Na-doped materials increases with increasing Na concentration.
