Description
Summary:Correspondence to Dr Brett G Toresdahl, Primary Sports Medicine Service, Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, NY 10021, USA; toresdahlb@hss.edu In 2005, 1 year before Dr Domenico Corrado’s landmark publication on the effect of an ECG inclusive national preparticipation cardiovascular screening programme in Italy,1 Dr Joseph Marek was approached by the mother of a 17-year-old male athlete who recently died of sudden cardiac arrest. More than just a cardiac screening programme The programme also seeks to promote sudden cardiac arrest awareness in the community, assist schools with developing emergency action plans for cardiac emergencies and support ‘gold heart families’ who have lost a child to sudden cardiac death. ECG screening results in 32 561 participants from 2006 through 2009 were published in Heart Rhythm.3 Later, Dr Marek and Kathy published in the Journal of Electrocardiology a quality assessment of the ECGs performed by non-medical volunteers at the screening events.2 Respected mentor and friend Dr Marek is widely known for his expertise in ECG in interpretation in young athletes.
