Summary: | The application of a steric stabilization strategy to the processing of nonaqueous silicon slips is investigated. With this method, unfavorable particle interactions within silicon slips processed in benzene and trichloroethylene can be effectively controlled. Use of specific polymers additives (poly(styrene), poly(methyl methacrylate), and their copolymer) results in a substantial improvement in the pressure casting performance of silicon slips. Control of particle agglomeration during processing yields green compacts with better packing as reflected by the measurements of cake permeability and casting resistance. Substantial improvement in green compacts density was seen. The polymer additives also acted as binders providing sufficient green strength to the compacts so as to render them handleable. |
