Pressure--Composition Isotherms of Thin PdH sub c Films

Description
Summary:It is found that the pressure--composition isotherms for the absorption--desorption of hydrogen in thin Pd films of thickness 300 nm do not deviate from those for bulk PdH sub c , whereas the dissociation plateaux in the isotherms for Pd films of thickness 50 nm are narrower than those for the bulk and the critical temperature is reduced by approx 26K. From a study of the pressure--composition isotherms for Pd crystallites on H absorption it is concluded that the lowering of the critical temperature is due partly to the presence of crystallites in the 50 nm films and to volume restrictions (e.g. clamping) imposed by the substrate. 15 ref.--AA
