Summary: | Martin Tucker Plaque on rue Furstemberg leading to Place Furstemberg: 1629-1704 Cardinal, Abbe de Saint Germain Des Pres When I saw her sitting on the rim of the raised circle in Place Furstemberg she seemed lost in thought, and I knew my looking at her would not disturb the world she was holding within her. [...]I stared at this stunning blonde woman, fashionably dressed, her sitting figure as graceful as I imagined her standing firm and lithe. What gave me pleasure was the knowledge someone had discovered my hiding place and was not robbing me of space but adding his own mystery to a common ground. On my other visits the Place had been shorn of everything but the tear-drop lamp and the withered branches in winter, or by raucous summmer laughter of college students who had heard of its haunting beauty. Take a circle for granite, raise it a step of imagination, place a tree on it and shuttered French windows beside it, and build one solitary cast-iron lamp with moon eyes for light or, as I always see them, tear drops to see the heart by. |
