Summary: | Charles, the only tribal member running for president, defined the theme of the forum: the federal government's mistreatment and neglect of Native Americans. After greetings in their traditional languages, panelists shifted to English to ask about issues like the struggle to renew traditional languages decimated by government boarding schools, protection of Native children's right to stay in their families and communities, upholding voting rights, protecting sacred sites threatened with desecration, federal-tribal consultation and U.S. Census undercounts of Native people. First-term U.S. Rep. Deb Haaland (D.-N.M.), from Laguna Pueblo and one of the first Native women elected to Congress, introduced Warren as a valued collaborator and "my sister in the struggle." |
