Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to examine the diversity of doctoral dissertation topics in sport management. One goal was to determine if doctoral students are being encouraged to develop research agendas in a variety of areas. The authors of the study found a lack of diversity in dissertation topics because most (75.7%) are completed in four areas: sport marketing, human resource management in sport, organizational theory in sport, and other sociology. A contributing factor to the lack of diversity in research topics could be related to the research focus of doctoral advisors. The authors found significant gender differences in topic areas. Men are more likely to complete dissertations in marketing and finance, whereas women gravitate more toward sociology. The authors suggest that faculty advisors work on the development of the field and its expansion in order to achieve diversity in sport management research.
