Description
Summary:In April and May 2006, researchers from the Shirshov Institute Oceanology and Moscow State University (Faculty of Geology and Faculty of Geography) carried out complex geological-geophysical works in the central Caspian Sea onboard the R/V Rift (Fig. 1). One of the purposes of the marine expedition conducted in the framework of several research programs [1] was study of sedimentary waves, unique sinuous structures in the upper part of the sedimentary cover on the continental slope of the western Caspian Sea, which were mapped during the cruise of this vessel in 2004 [2]. Specific sedimentary structures known as sedimentary waves are widespread in deep areas of the World Ocean [3, 4]. Such wavy structures (undulations) are distinctly manifested in the topography of the seafloor and the structure of underlying sediments. Recently, similar undulations were also discovered at intermediate depths and even on shallow-water prodelta slopes (see, for example, [57]).
