Summary: | Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei are commonly cultured in ponds containing high-salinity water. Given the euryhaline nature of this species, some farmers and investigators have been focusing effort on culturing Pacific white shrimp in low-salinity environments. If low-salinity culture is feasible, wide-scale inland culture of this species may be possible. Inland culture may be more economically viable than coastal culture in developed countries due to the high cost of land and environmental protection in coastal areas. In this study we determined the short-term survival and growth of Pacific white shrimp postlarvae in selected low-salinity and mixed-salt environments. The mixed salts (chlorides of calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium) were investigated as a possible means of reducing the need for addition of the more expensive sea salts. These results will also begin to provide a basis for the selection of saline aquifers as a water source for inland shrimp farming. |
