Summary: | Dr. James R. Dixon (1928-2015) was born in Houston, TX and lived in El Campo, TX, throughout most of his childhood. He explored the land and denizens near his home with the same boundless curiosity and energy that would be the foundation of a remarkable academic career. He would eventually settle his family in Bryan, Texas, and spend the next 43 years in a house familiar to family, both kin and academic. Jim "Doc" Dixon, affectionately known to many students as Bwana Jim due to his prowess in the field, was a Texas herpetological icon, but his life's work was even larger than the scale of his home state. He contributed significantly to our understanding of reptiles and amphibians and mentored an array of biologists who continue those efforts today. He conducted research worldwide, but focused on the faunas of the US, Mexico, Central America, and South America. |
